Hi Pownal!

Thank you to our fire and rescue squads for their heroic efforts last Friday evening. Anyone who wasn't aware of the heavy winds must be even heavier sleepers! Pownal suffered quite a lot of damage and our heroes were out there cleaning up every step of the way. Thank you also to all the members of the Highway Department for all the amazing cleanup that made it seem like nothing happened.

Green Up Pownal Day was a resounding success! Over 50 people participated including countless children. North Pownal Road, Cedar Hill Road, Quarry Hill Road, the south end of Carpenter Hill Road, Ladd Brook and Skiparee are just some of the areas tackled.

Please do what you can to pick up garbage when you are out for walks and keep Pownal beautiful and clean. Encourage neighbors not to litter. More news and photos below.

If you have an event coming up or news to announce send the information my way to

Very Best Wishes,
Jenny Dewar, Member of the Pownal Select Board

The Select Board will be interviewing the finalists for the position of Town Administrator during the month of May. The candidates will also have the opportunity to meet with various departments and staff. We should have the new Town Administrator joining us this summer!

Town Plan

The town hearing was held on Wednesday night. Thank you so much to everyone who attended. About 15 people came to share their thoughts that were all positive. Thank you to members of the town who came. The Select Board will hold a special meeting to take action on the Town Plan on Tuesday, May 15 at 6pm in the Town Office.

Who's Who
Pownal Rep for the BCRC

Walter A. Klinger

town of pownal

Flatlander, freeholder, would be farmer, who left la dolce vita for the simple country life, thirty years ago; and, have not looked back (nor forward, either). Consider myself to be a bourgeois Marxist who follows Chico (why a duck?) more than Karl (why a bank?).

I cook, I clean (not often), I make bird noises. I grow modest strawberries, garden vegetables, prolific poison ivy, and nettles, on three quarters acre of prime, wooded  ledge (glaciers stole all the dirt, 12,00 years ago).

Said to make the best jambalaya in Yankee land. Bake honey bread, pies, and boil sap (est. 3 to 5 gals/yr). Building a formal sugarhouse (black tie only) to keep the snow off me and evaporator. Boiling sap is a lot like firing steam locomotives, but, with less bouncing around, and no Rule G.

When i can’t sleep at night, I write bad poetry, and chase Schrodinger’s stray cat. Dorothy Parker is a favorite. Also fond of a lot of Russian poets. They are all so “cheery” you know.

Officially “retired” from a long career on the “high iron” in Vermont, as a semi-conductor for Amtrak. Before that, did environmental consulting for major energy, chemical companies, all over the US. Know a lot of arcane things, that only engineers and gear heads worry about. Nothing like a lively discussion of Maxwells’ field equations, after dinner, to put everyone to sleep. Am a proud, adoptive parent, of some spent fuel rods from Vermont Yankee.

Currently, a Pownal Rep at Bennington County Regional Commission. Working on various brownfields projects, and on bringing passenger rail service back to the area. I do historical presentations, 18th century re-enactments for Pownal, Shaftsbury Historical Societies, and docent at the Old First Church in Bennington.  History often ain’t what you think.

Congratulations and Thanks:

  • Congratulations to Kate Erin, daughter of Joel and Karen Burrington. One of the horses she helps care for, Good Magic, came in 2nd in the Kentucky Derby. Way to represent Powna!
  • Congratulations to Harwood Homestead for receiving a $1000 gift card from Tractor Supply as part of their Farmer Veteran Fellowship Fund program. They have chosen 50 US military veterans with farming or ranching businesses! Ashley Harwood will be presented with this honor on May 19.
  • Thank you to Tom Shuey and team leaders Megan Randall, Dave Low, and Sarah Harwood, for guiding various teams on Green Up Day. Thank you to all the volunteers who tackled additional roads. We picked over 200 bags, 54 tires, and approximately 2.5 tons of loose trash. The barbeque at the Legion was also great fun. Hot dogs, veggie burgers and more were enjoyed by the volunteers with Tom at the grill. Thank you also to TAM and Stewart's Shops for their generosity.
