New Pownal Public Wi-Fi Hotspot
The Town of Pownal has a new public wifi hotspot. Thank you - SoVT CUD for getting this done for our Town!
Here is a copy of the letter notifying the Town of the Grant and Hotspot.
To the Pownal Selectboard,
As Pownal's representatives to the Southern Vermont Communications Union District (SoVT CUD), we're happy to inform the Board that the community has received a new public Wi-Fi hotspot.
The SoVT CUD was recently notified by Robert Fish of the Vermont Department of Public Service (DPS) that the state was accepting applications for new Wi-Fi hot spot installations. Facing a fast-approaching deadline, we applied and were quickly granted a new public hotspot at the Pownal Valley Central Fire Station. The access point was installed on November 28th and is ready for use by the community. No username or password is necessary.
The DPS aims to deploy 50 public Wi-Fi hotspots around the state by year's end, using COVID relief funds to help communities address distance learning, telehealth and remote work challenges during the pandemic. There are currently two public hotspots in Pownal - the Solomon Wright Public Library and the Pownal Elementary School. A third at the Central Fire Station, accessible at all hours from a parked vehicle in the station parking lot, will provide additional internet access to residents with poor or no service — nearly 10 percent of the buildings in Pownal, as measured by the DPS.
Special thanks go to Jason Olansky, Pownal Valley Fire Chief, who helped in the application process and in opening the fire station on a holiday weekend to ensure the hotspot was quickly installed.
